Warming-up
Good morning, boys and girls. Nice to see you again. In the past week, we have meet a lot of funny stories. I know many of you have kinds of funny stories, but how to write them down? Today we would learn how to write a humor story.
Before we start, let’s enjoy a short story. Now listen carefully.
A man walks into a bar with a duck under his arm.
The bartender asks: "Hey, where did you find the pig?"
"It's not a pig, it's a duck," the man answers.
To which the barman replies: "I was talking to the duck".
Very typical story, right? I saw some of you laughed and others didn’t. How many of you thought it was funny? Please hand up. Why you think it is funny? Yes so many reasons.
Now I want you to discuss with your partner whether you think the story you listen to is funny. Give your reasons. These words and expressions in the chart on page 23 might be useful for your discussion. Understand?
Pre-writing
OK. I saw most of you have finished. Then, think of a funny English or Chinese and tell it to your partner. While telling your stories, use expressions and some acting to help make the story as funny as you can. I would give you 5 minutes to do this.
OK. Time’s up! So much fun in our classroom. Would some like to share your story with us? Emily, you please. Well, I will write down what you say on the blackboard. So would you please slow down while telling? Thank you. Now begin! OK. We got 8 sentences on there.
About those sentences, I would ask you some questions. How many parts can we pide them into? 4? 3? OK. Let’s see which sentences are necessary and which we can delete? Jack..
OK. We got 6sentences now. Can we find out how many parts we can pide them into? Yes, 3 parts. What are the function of each paragraph? Who knows? Tommy? You said the first part is about the background; the second one is about the acting and the third is the result of the story. Nice answer? Do you all agree? OK. Cherry, you said the third part should be called Climax. Good girl, you get the point! But in funny story writing, we have some special terms for each part.
In the first part, we focus on the situation where the joke occurs. So we name it Situation. And the second one mainly talk about what happened in that situation. So we call it What happened. They are both about the background. The last part is the most important part and we have a special name for it: Punchline. A little bit strange, right? It means giving a hit using your fist. So we can get the meaning of punchline. It means we give the readers a punch with the last line and make them laugh. It is similar to Climax. But they have a difference: in a passage, we usually continue to write the ending or result after the climax. But in there, we don’t need to go on after the punchline. We just run away after punch them into laughing.
We get the format of a funny story. Would someone like to sum it for us? Mike, would you please? Yes, you get the correct format.
While-writing
Now I will give you 1 minute to organize your stories into the format before write it down.
OK! Write down our stories in the following 7 minutes.
Time’s up!
Post-writing
All of you have finished. It’s good! Look at the blackboard. I set 3 pieces of standard there. Check and revise your writing according to them. Have you finished? Now change your writing with group members and edit for each other. OK. Who want to share your writing with us? Fred. You please! What a funny story. Mary, how about you? What a fool that man is. Good story. You all did a good job.
However I found there are some mistakes in some of your writing. The most common one is the usage of quotation mark, especially the closing quotation mark. It should be used after the period or other punctuation equals to a period. That is to say, what you quote should be a complete content, no punctuation should be lost. For example: "What did she say when she was asked her favorite wine?" he wondered to himself. Understand?
Summary and homework
Before the ending of our class, I would invite some of you to summary what we learned today. Harry, would you like to do a summary? Good boy. You have a wonderful day I think. And I need another one to summary what we learned this week....
Now who would like to share your own understanding of the difference effect between telling a joke and write one? Nancy, please! Quite unique understanding. Thank you!
After class, I need you to finish two tasks: To collect at least five humor stories creatively and finish the chart of Summing up in the textbook. That’s all for today. Thank you for attending and I wish you can enjoy the weekend. Class is over. See you next time!
